We believe God has predestined this appointment, and we seek a humble, empathetic leader who will guide us with wisdom, authenticity, and spiritual fervor. WE ARE BETHEL
WE
WE ARE THE HOUSE
Founded in 1917 by Deacon M.J. Jones and a devoted band of believers, Bethel Baptist Church began under the pastoral care of Rev. W.B. Neal, who served until 1937. Named "Bethel"—a place of God's presence—our church originated on Dodd Street in Orange, New Jersey, before relocating several times and settling at our current home: 229 Wallace Street, Orange, NJ 07050. Through God's provision, we expanded to a two-story structure under Rev. Hayes G. Thompson and underwent a full renovation in the mid-1990s under Rev. R. Russel White Jr., emerging mortgage-free and ready for greater works.
Nestled in the vibrant urban landscape of Orange, New Jersey—a city rich in history, diverse demographics, and community spirit (explore more: History of Orange, Fast Facts, or Demographics)—Bethel is a beacon of hope amid change. Our congregation, approximately 100 strong in weekly attendance and online fellowship, reflects a beautiful tapestry: predominantly of African heritage with a blend of cultures and nationalities united in Christ. We are a multi-generational family, blending lifelong members with newcomers, featuring a diverse group of believers that are striving to be more like Christ daily! Though we have faced membership decline like most churches post-pandemic, we are eager to continue embracing innovative ministries that address evolving dynamics, foster growth, and bridge generational gaps in our community.
Our organizational structure supports holistic ministry, including: Ministerial Staff, Diaconate and Trustee Ministries, Department of Christian Education, Missionary & Feed the Sheep Ministries, and Worship Arts Ministry (including Music, Media, Dance, & Drama), and a host of other various outreach efforts. As we journey forward, we remain committed to being a Spirit-seeking, Spirit-filled, and Spirit-directed community.
